DAY 160 MONDAY AUGUST 31 - MANY MORE LAKES

Once again we woke to beautiful Ontario scenery.  It is just amazing how many small lakes we have passed along the track.  It is just like Scandinavia.  There are a lot of deciduous trees starting to turn yellow, mixed in among the pines and firs.  Where there are no trees there are always big rocks, so we can imagine what the Rocky Mountains will be like.

We were timetabled to spend three hours in Winnipeg, but because we were so late they only took an hour to refuel and take on new passengers and new crew.  It is surprising that Winnipeg has a population of over half a million, given that the population appears to be so sparse on either side along the railway.  This is all we saw of the city.

Before coming into Winnipeg we passed quite suddenly from forest to prairies and the farms were quite interesting to watch.  There was still lots of water around.

Shortly after Winnipeg we stopped at Portage and saw several small animals playing on the grass.

Our waitress told us they were prairie dogs.  They were like squirrels but their tails were like feathers.  We saw some very large fields of potatoes and a Lays chip factory.  There were sunflower fields and many bales of hay waiting to be collected.

After dinner we went to the dome car and watched a beautiful sunset, which lasted half an hour.  We put our clocks back an hour again.

The meals are even better with the new crew.  We have shared mealtime with people from Sweden, Boston, New York State, Queensland and Frankfurt.
