DAY 41 MONDAY MAY 4 - BANK HOLIDAY - START OF STAGE 2 OF OUR TRIP

After exploring the city of Southampton yesterday, finding our way to the station this morning was a literal walk in the park.  In the days when sick people came to dunk in the mineral springs, the town elders set aside many green areas, so you can now walk to many places through lovely parks.  Our train to Birmingham was to leave from Platform 1, which involved no steps, straight after the train to London left.  For some reason the London train did not move and an announcement came : "Changed to Platform 2a".  Lugged the luggage along Platform 1,  up the stairs, down the stairs, along the platform to our seats on the furthest carriage, thinking all the time of the movie "M. Hulot's Holiday".   A bad start to our Britrail holiday, but the rest of the day was very relaxing,

watching the green and yellow crops pass by.  And our beloved solar panel farms and windmill forests.

We changed trains at Birmingham under our own knowledge, as two station staff did not know which train was going to Cambridge.  We got off at Cambridge and found our way easily to our B and B for once.  It is a small room but quite adequate.  Our first exploration of the town was quite different to our expectations.  The roads are narrow, the buildings not very high and the shops tiny.  Not as welcoming as York.

The pedestrians outnumber the bike riders and the bike riders outnumber the cars, but there are enough cars to make it appear dangerous.  The news of the day outside the paper shop was ominous.
