DAY 56 TUESDAY MAY 19 - BAGUETTE DAY

We started our first day in France in the traditional way by walking to the boulangerie and buying a fresh baguette (.85 euro) for breakfast.  Then we set off with a sketchy map, being very careful crossing roads as we have trouble working out which direction the cars are coming at us.

We found the railway station and spent some time in the ticket office with a young lady who told us we could only book trains in France from Rennes station office.  We have heard that story before, so we will try again as we move on.  Later we used the DB (German) website to book and reserve seats from Frankfurt to Regensburg.

At the Post Office no one spoke English but we managed to post a letter to Australia and buy two containers to send home some excess baggage.  At the Carrefour (crossroads) grocery we stocked up on food because we have to prepare our own food now for the first time since we left home.

The weather was unpredictable today.  We got caught in a shower twice, but it was not too cold.  A brief hail storm this afternoon convinced us this was a good day to sort out money issues on the computer and get used to our apartment.

We saw signs around the corner from our place that next Sunday would be the day for a Grande Randonnee.  We found a website indicating this would be a mini Tour de France for bikes before 1990.  Looking forward to that.
