DAY 75 SUNDAY JUNE 7 - ST ANTON HAS PIGS AND A KANGAROO

In Mayrhofen they told us there are no kangaroos in Austria.  Today we found one. Supposedly.

We obtained an excellent map and some advice from our Host, Andreas, and set off to walk to the Krazy Kanguruh at 8:30am.

The storm we had last night had cleared and the sun was shining with a predicted max of 24C.  It was a steep climb up, but we got there by following roads.  The restaurant is in a beautiful position with views over the town and up to the mountains.

It has been owned since 2006 by Mario Matt, a former Olympic skier, but is closed for the summer.

Our daughter Evelyn worked here for a few seasons twenty years ago.  Another choice spot.

We continued round the back of the building to the Sonnenweg (sunny track) which had recently been renovated  along the first section and furniture placed in memory of a skier who died in 2011.

We came across two curiously placed signs saying track closed, but decided to continue, zigzagging along the hillside and through the forest.  We ran into a tree that had fallen across the track.  It was still completely green so we assumed it had blown over in the storm last night, whereas the "track closed' signs looked old and more likely related to the renovations.  We broke off some of the smaller branches and managed to straddle the trunk.

We passed very close to a family of pigs but they were harmless.

Twice we had to pass through gates to cross paddocks, fenced electrically and holding brown cows and a black bull.  How now? Quite warily, trying not to catch the eye of the bull.  It was getting very warm but the last part of the walk was mostly shaded and downhill.

We arrived "home" at 11:30, so we must have done 9 or 10 kilometres, enough for today.  There are 100+ eating places in St Anton, but we took a while to find one open and they served us a beautiful lunch for 20 euros total.

We spent two hours this afternoon going over our plans for tomorrow's journey to Thollon.  We need to catch 7 trains with only 4 minutes grace a couple of times, so we wrote down some backup plans, using ferries, taxis and buses.  This is our biggest challenge yet.
