We had booked a week at the Renaissance Resort in Tuscany through Luxury Escapes, the same people who booked us into Zillertal, Austria. It cost AUD900 for bed and breakfast. We caught a train from Pisa S.Rossore to Lucca and while we waited for our next train we checked out the route to our hotel here next Monday. We now have a map and a set of instructions, so hopefully we will be able to walk to the hotel without getting lost.
The next train was a regional second class only, but it was brand new and better than the expensive first class train we used yesterday. At Barga-Gallicano we rang for a taxi and drove up the hill, arriving at 12:30 pm. The resort is huge and has a magnificent site on the hillside overlooking two villages.
The emphasis here is on luxury, offering massages, mud wraps, anti-cellulite treatment, a spiced couple treatment with prices ranging from 45-280 euros. We do get a free Italian Cooking Class worth 150 euros each and a free wine tasting session. Our room is good but not really as good as we expected. Only one lounge chair for a double room seems pretty standard. The only way to watch TV is from the bed. We have a nice balcony with two chairs and being on the ninth floor we have one of the best views across the valley.
There are indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a cafe and restaurant with room service, a nice library area and a navigation desk for help with activities. It has a lot in common with our experience on the QM2.
We are isolated again because there is no bus service and we have not found any walking paths yet so we are hoping there are enough opportunities for us to fill in a week. We had dinner in the restaurant which was a little expensive but excellent food.
