DAY 135 THURSDAY AUGUST 6 - PRAGUE

We had a pleasant four hour train trip from Bratislava to Prague, followed by a taxi ride which started off as 35 euros and after an apparent auction among the drivers came down to 15.  Cheapest ones are usually the best.

We were staying close to the main square and it was amazing how many tourists there were; mainly backpackers and tour groups from buses.  Some have said it is the most beautiful city in the world and the old buildings are as attractive as anywhere else we have been.  Cobbled lanes lead from one large square to another and there are buskers everywhere, creating a happy mood.  People were climbing the shot tower to view the city from on high.

There was a bridal couple touring the square in a nice carriage,

There are some lovely churches around the squares and many of them are offering concerts every night.

Prague was where the musical film Les Miserables was set instead of Paris and you can see how similar the buildings are.  As we walked along the river we could imagine the scene where Javert fell into the river and drowned.  There are plenty of spots where the barricade could have been set up.

At 8pm we attended a classical music concert in St Michael's Monastery, which was just around the corner.  It went for an hour and covered 18 of our favourite pieces for orchestra and opera.  There was a string quartet and a soprano and they performed very professionally.  The ceiling of the small hall was beautifully painted.

A good night's entertainment for 400 Koruna ($20) each.

Franz Kafka seems to be related to Prague.
