We had a good breakfast in the Halliburton Hotel, then explored our route to get to the Lord Nelson, where we will stay for the next three nights. First we descended to the waterfront where we used the Information Centre to book a nine hour tour for Thursday that will take us down the South Coast. Then we returned to the Halliburton and checked out, telling them the room they gave us was very good - no problems at all.
Because we now have our party clothes with us it was a long haul up to the Lord Nelson, but we will have limousines to transfer us from here on, so it won't happen again. Our room was not available till 3pm so we spent two hours in the Public Gardens opposite. They date back to the early 1800s and have a lot of shady trees, winding paths, a bandstand, a lake and colourful flower beds. There was a special dahlia display this week. They paid a tribute to the International Year of Soils in this way.
Some beds were set out like serpents with forked tongues coming out of a raised head.
We strolled around and sat in the shade in various spots. One seat was next to an enclosure for a pair of large geese with wattles. The passing children enjoyed them.
After a large ice cream we got the keys to our room and found we had a double bed each but only one bedside table, in between them. That gives us plenty of possible sleeping arrangements.
