DAY 79 THURSDAY JUNE 11 - BLACKOUT

We were feeling as though our knees needed a break after the walk down from the mountains yesterday.  We wanted to send some postcards, so we walked to the post office which is actually about two kilometres down the main road.  On the way we called in at the Tourism Centre for some more advice and the friendly lady helped us out.  She told us we were crazy when we told her our plan to visit the town of Ivoire on Saturday.  It involves bus, ferry, ferry, ferry, walk, train, walk, ferry, bus for the round trip.

The lady at the Post Office was English and enjoyed talking to Australians.  She has a cousin in Bexley; they all know someone in Australia.  We took the shortcuts back up the hill, which were fairly steep, so we had our quota of hiking for the morning.  We stopped at the bakery, supermarket and cafe on the way through town for quality French goodies.

We relaxed at home till about noon when the television died.  Checking the light switches indicated a blackout.  At 3pm we had our first knock on the front door and it was not the Mormons.  It was Rachel Baxter from up the street asking whether we were going to be all right and warning us that blackouts are sometimes lengthy here. We had another good chat and told her we hired a canal boat in Skipton, where she comes from.

The sun was out and the fog was lifting so we headed back to Point de Vue to see what we missed yesterday.  It was still unclear but we could see the Swiss Alps behind Montreux and remembered the time we jumped on the Chocolate Train on a whim at Montreux and had the most amazing ride up the hill looking over Lake Geneva.

On our way back home we took the Chemin des Croix which has 14 solid crosses up above the main road and we assume this is used for the stations of the cross ritual.

We killed time until the power came on at 7pm.  We watched Airport II over dinner.  Tonight we can see the lights of the cities across the lake.

  1. Will you still be free to meet up in Milan on Monday? If so, our train from Padova will arrive into Milan Centrale at 1125am. Its origin will probably have been Venizia SL. Thank you for your most interesting blogs covering your incredible sojourn. Perhaps you could reply on my local Lebara number which is +447795448490. Not sure if a 0 needs to be placed between 44 and 77. We would need to return to Padova on a train departing Milan @1705. Regards Stephen and Susan.

  2. We do not arrive until 17:37 in Milan, walking to the Tadino Expo apartment by 18:00, on Monday. We are free on Tuesday if you are not already booked that day. Sorry, Malcolm and Lyn.

  3. Hi Malcolm, Lyn.
We are traveling to Rome on Tuesday as we have brought forward our flight home to a Wednesday departure instead of Friday. Sorry we will miss catching up. We hope you enjoy Milan and the rest of your journey. We spent today in Venice. Most interesting although unpleasantly hot which made for a tiring day. Best wishes from Susan and Stephen.
